Online round of IET India Scholarship 2016 was organised from 25th to 28th of May. Details of the exam were:
- Duration: 90 Minutes
- Total No of questions: 48
- Syllabus: Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Electrical, Electronics, Civil, Mechanical, Computer Science
- The question paper was divided into 8 sections, each belonging to a particular subject.
- It was mandatory to attempt at least one question from each section, failing which you would be disqualified straight away.
- There was no negative marking.
- Out of 6 questions in each section, 3 Q's carried one mark each, 2 Q's carried 3 marks each and 1 Q's was of 5 marks.
Syllabus:
1st and 2nd-year syllabus was covered in entirety but the level of questions was pretty easy. The main problem is that since questions are asked from domains other than your particular streams as well and that too from the second-year syllabus, it is a bit tricky but then that's the case for all. So no one is at any disadvantage.
I will simply quote some of the questions I remember:
Note: I am an Electrical engineering student, So I focused more on Physics, Chemistry, Electrical, Electronics and Maths. And as a result, most of the question from Civil Mechanical and CSE got slipped away. Pardon for it! Otherwise, Hope it Benefits You!
Physics:
- A ball of mass 0.25 kg moving with a speed of 20 m/s strikes a surface and rebounds back with the same velocity. It takes 0.01 seconds to rebound. Calculate the Force exerted on the surface.
- In a Carnot engine, the difference between the temperatures of hot and cold bodies is 80. The efficiency of the engine is 25%. Calculate the temperature of the cold body. (Pretty simple again. Ans was perhaps -33'C)
- If it takes 5 minutes for a body to cool from 70'C to 60'C, then what time will the same body take to coll from 80'C to 70'C?
- What is the energy stored in a capacitor of 50μF charged to a potential of 10V?
- The time period of a pendulum hanging from the ceiling of the train is T. Train starts accelerating at an acceleration ‘a’. What will be the new time period?

Mathematics:
- Critical points for transformation of w= z+ 1/z are, options were: A) ±1 B) ±i C) ±i/2 D) ±1/2
- Find the particular solution for the D.E dy/dx+ y/x=4x^2 , Given that for x=1, y=1. Ans was 4xy=x^4+3 .
- Calculate the coefficient of x^8 in (x-1)(x-2)(x-3)………………(x-10).
- If the probability of hitting a target by a player is 1/4 . He takes n trials. For what value of ‘n’, the probability of hitting at least once will be greater than 2/3 . Options were A) 2 B)4 C) 6 D) 8.
- What is the expression of mean in binomial distribution? Ans: np
Electrical:
- In series resonance , following of which condition is satisfied: A) XL=XC B) XL=R C) Z=R D) Both A & C
- A question on transformer was based on simple application of the formula 3 VI cos ∅ =Q(in W) Data was given, line current was supposed to b calculated.
- In a single phase half wave controlled rectifier, what is the average output voltage if input voltage is 400cos 130ωt V, firing angle is 60º , and the load is purely resistive.
Electronics:
- In which condition does JK flip flop act as a toggle? Ans J=1 K=1
- What is the role of Sample and hold circuit in A/D conversion. Ans: To stabilize inputprobably ; not sure).
- Reduce the following Boolean expression F=C(B+C)(A+B+C). Ans : F=C
